Looking out for us?
Sunday, November 06, 2005 Editor, The News:
The ignorance of the Saginaw County Board of
Commissioners is unbelievable. ("Commissioners give dioxin measure a boost,"
Oct. 27)
Being labeled a facility is not the problem with properties along the
Tittabawassee River. It is the dioxin! If you go to the county commissioners'
Web site you will read their mission statement: "...County governments'
responsibilities are to protect the safety, welfare and health of the residents
in our community."
Instead, they chose to look out for the welfare of the polluters and special
interests.
Have you ever heard one elected official, just one, voice his or her concern for
the health of the families who live along the river? I haven't.
Like our legislators, the commissioners try hard to convince people it is about
"property rights." What about my right to uncontaminated property? My right to
feel safe in my yard? Of course, if the commissioners defend my rights, it would
require acknowledging that dioxin is the problem and that it is toxic.
Somehow, I do not see any of my elected officials taking a position contrary to
Dow Chemical! We voted them in. They need to look out for us.
