The Dow Chemical Co. broke through to the "Fortune 50" in this year's
magazine ranking of the largest publicly held companies.

The largest American chemical producer landed at No. 44 with more than
$5 billion more in revenue than its nearest competitor, DuPont, (No. 59.)
The shift puts Dow up seven places from last year, when it lingered at No.
51.

The list is a source of pride for Dow employees, said Financial
Communications Leader Cindy Newman, but its personal measure of success is
far broader.

"Our overall objective is maximizing long-term shareholder value," she
said.

Dow is continuing efforts to increase earnings, decrease debt, manage
price and volume, and reduce costs in the upcoming year. The company
celebrated record sales of 32.6 billion year in 2003.

The full Fortune list will appear in the magazine's April 5 issue. More
than 1,000 companies have appeared in the ranks since they were first
published in 1955. About 70 have appeared each year since then. Dow is one
of them.
