| With the Tittabawassee River edging toward flood stage, Midland County's emergency services director advises people with homes or businesses along the river to be cautious and watchful. | |
| At 8 a.m. the
Tittabawassee River level stood at 22.05 feet; its flood stage is 24 feet. The
National Weather Service predicts the river will
crest Tuesday morning at 24.4 feet. Emergency Services Director Roger Garner said people need to be aware of water in unexpected places. "Everyone just needs to be aware of all the water that's around everywhere -- standing in ditches and low-lying areas," he said. Tittabawassee River Road from Cook Road to Dublin Avenue was closed this morning, as was Emerson Park Drive. Midland Public Services Director Marty McGuire said St. Andrews Drive and Currie Parkway would be closed by press time today. Currie Municipal Golf Courses and Chippewassee and Emerson parks were flooded. McGuire asked residents to remove debris from catch basins to keep water flowing through the storm sewer system. Utilities Director Noel Bush said he's received a couple of complaints about street flooding caused by clogged catch basins or because water is coming from streets that are supposed to store water during heavy rains. "This morning I drove around for about 40 minutes and saw nothing of concern" other than clogged basins, he said. The city's sanitary sewer system continues to work well, Bush said. The plant treats 18 million gallons a day. When the system receives more than that, the excess goes into a large storage basin. That basin still has 15 million gallons of capacity left for storing water set to be treated later at the plant. Garner advised people to call the emergency services hotline, (888) TELL-MORE, for hourly updates. |
