High Dioxin Levels Found In Saginaw River

(TV5) Saginaw--The conflict over where to put possible contaminated sediment continues to grow. Over the next two decades, the Saginaw River could be dredged and the sediment may be moved to a site in the Zilwaukee area.

The Lone Tree Council, an environmental group, obtained test results from sediment sampling taken by the Army Corps.of Engineers. One sample shows a dioxin concentration of eleven thousand eight hundred parts per trillion in the Saginaw River, more than one hundred thirty times over the state limit and about twelve times higher than the federal guidelines. Another study shows level as low as point twenty-eight parts per trillion.

The dioxin tainted sediment is supposed to be dumped on county owned property. The Corps. of Engineers is not planning an environmental impact study. The EPA does support dredging the river but not to proceed as planned. Their reason is that dredging would prevent dioxins from getting into the Great Lakes.

Dow Chemical released a statement saying that they were not involved in the sampling, and the entire river system could carry contamination from agricultural runoff, municipal waste and various industrial sources.

The outcome of the sampling and the proposed dumping site has left some local residents furious.

TRW note: TV-5 has a video segment on this story on-line for a few days, visit www.wnem.com to view. The on-air reporter made an error in stating the Tittabawassee River will be dredged. Actually the proposed storage site will be for the Saginaw River dredging material.
