Focus on dioxin

The state has announced plans for quarterly community meetings
for talking about dioxin, starting this week at the Horizons Conference Center,
6200 State. The meeting runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The meeting is hosted jointly by the state Department of Environmental Quality
and Dow Chemical Co. -- the regulator and regulatee, respectively, in cleaning
up dioxin contamination downstream of Dow's Midland plant.
Officials will use the forum to discuss community involvement, plans for
clean-up and various studies involving dioxin. A copy of the agenda is online at
www.michigan.gov/deqdioxin
DEQ and Dow officials say they will answer questions 30 minutes before and after
the meeting.
Meetings also are set for Thursday, Feb. 9; Wednesday, May 10; and Wednesday,
Aug. 9. v
