Flood waters receding

Waters that flooded some roads and pushed the Tittabawassee River to nearly 23
feet are receding.
The river, which has a flood stage of 24 feet, crested at 22.81 feet on Thursday
because of a combination of rainfall and melting snow, said Roger Garner,
Midland County's emergency services director. That height isn't unusual for this
time of year when the area might receive snow followed by rain, he said. Garner
said all the Tittabawassee's tributaries are going down.
The river's height Friday was around 19 feet, according to a graph on the U.S.
Geological Survey's website.
Midland Public Services Director Marty McGuire said these conditions -- snow
followed by rain -- don't happen a lot but "it's not unheard of." Part of
Tittabawassee River Road was open Friday to local traffic only, but that was to
allow the road to firm up, he said.
Water reached into Emerson Park and onto Currie Municipal Golf Courses.
"We're OK unless it would freeze up before the water left," McGuire said of the
golf courses. If freezing were to occur, it might cause turf damage.
