UNIVERSITY CENTER -- University of Michigan researchers studying dioxin exposure to residents living along the Tittabawassee River floodplain planned to discuss their findings at a public meeting Tuesday at Saginaw Valley State University

Dow Chemical Co. paid for the $15 million study. Its purpose was to determine if people living near Dow's production facilities at Midland had higher levels of dioxin than people living elsewhere in Michigan

Dioxin, a byproduct of Dow Chemical processes dating back several decades, settled into the soil and river sediment along at least 22 miles of floodplain downstream from Dow operations at Midland. Critics worry that exposure to could lead to cancer and other health problems.

Dr. David Garabrant, a professor of epidemiology and head of the University of Michigan research team, will present the results of the study Tuesday. Copies of the report will be available at the meeting and the study will be available online earlier in the day at www.umdioxin.org. v
