Dow asks state supreme court for change in dioxin rules
(TV5-AP) Saginaw--Dow Chemical has asked the Michigan Supreme Court to make a change in a cleanup order for dioxin in the Tittabawassee River. Dioxins are highly toxic byproducts of manufacturing and incineration systems. They may cause cancer, birth defects and other health problems in humans.
The contaminated sludge is in the Saginaw area, downstream from Dow's Midland chemical plant. The company is asking the state's high court to remove a requirement that it monitor the health of area residents.
More than 300 people are suing Dow over contamination along the Tittabawassee River, where tests have found high levels of dioxin. The people say that the chemical giant is trying to delay the case.
An amended complaint filed last week lists 310 plaintiffs, up from 179 in a previous complaint and 26 in the original filing. A Saginaw County judge will hold a hearing February 24th on certifying the lawsuit as a class action.
