Dioxin and Agriculture Friday, December 12, 2003

Farmers living in the Tittabawassee River flood plain area gathered at Freeland Elementary School to discuss concerns about possible dioxin exposure.

Toxicologist Brian Hughes of the Michigan Department of Agriculture says more soil testing on area farms is needed to better determine the risks that farmers and their neighbors may be facing. Hughes recommends farmers use the "no till" process to reduce the spread of dust which could become a dioxin exposure pathway. Hughes also urged farmers to avoid field work on windy days and to wear a mask over their mouths to avoid inhaling dust.

State officials from the Agriculture Department and Department of Environmental Quality organized the informational meeting last night
